Chapter 1, verse 1 · Dhritarashtra to Sanjaya
On the field of dharma, at Kurukshetra, gathered and eager to fight — what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do, O Sanjaya?
Context
The Bhagavad Gita opens with a question from the blind king Dhritarashtra. Unable to see the battlefield, he asks his minister Sanjaya what his sons and the sons of Pandu are doing at Kurukshetra — called here “the field of dharma”.
What it means today
The whole Gita begins with an anxious question from someone who cannot see what is happening and cannot control it. Most of our worries have the same shape. The rest of the book is the answer.
